To Boldly Go… Part II
The second day of mini adventures took us on an exploration of Hardistry creek off of the Icefields Parkway here in Jasper National Park. We are planning on doing a longish ski touring trip called The Six Pass, and were thinking of doing the original route called the Eight Pass which would add about a day to the tour. We decided that it would be a good idea to investigate the route without large packs on. Good thing we did! It didn’t take us very long to understand why nobody uses this route anymore It wasn’t so much Ski touring as ski tree climbing, a new sport designed by Christian and Sarah! We ended up travelling for about an hour and a half through quite unpleaseant skiing terrain before turning around. Although it was fun to be skiing in such a difficult environment, it is a little bit hard on the skis to be skiing on bare branches and rocks rather than snow. The creek bed was filled with piles of deadfall, creating a few passages, but also pits under the fallen trees that were a couple of metres deep. I seemed to have a knack for sliding into these Tree Caves, and having to take off my skis and crawl out then put my skis off again. Ohwell! We headed home and decided that we will just be doing the six pass ski route instead of the original eight pass route where nobody goes anymore!
